Mario's Metal Mania Reviews Black Sheep!febuary 13th 2008
I never had heard of this Dutch band CARRERA before, although this trio, who's existing of Johan Perk (guitar and lead vocals), Gino van den Hoek (bass, vocals) and Bas de Geert (drums) already exist 10 years. "Black Sheep" is their fifth album and features 13 tracks. When I put the CD in my CD-player and listened to the first track "All In" I immediately had to think of THE GECKO BROTHERS. I thought "hey nice band", but when the second song "Ten Years" started, that feeling was completely gone because on this track Carrera sounds totally different. Then the next two songs "Dad" and "Black Sheep" are a bit in the "speedrock" style, which I like a lot. Even "Black Sheep" could have been from PETER PAN SPEEDROCK (listen to the first two or three vocal lines, they remind to PPS's "Go Satan Go"). But with a lot of songs like "Ten Years", "My Love", "Enough", "Today I Sold My Soul To Satan" and "My Love" I had the feeling I was listening to an alternative guitar rock band or so, I don't know. Okay, I can listen to it, but I had hoped Carrera played more heavier songs. The album also has three covers, which are the instrumental "King Of The Hill" (The Refreshments), "Tupelo County Jail" (High Plains Tradition) and "Enjoy The Silence" (Depeche Mode). Anyway, my favorite songs of this album are "Black Sheep", "All In", the cover "Enjoy The Silence", "Dad", "Pretty Itch" (reminds me to BUDGIE) and the last one "Rock & Roll Is Dead". My conclusion is that "Black Sheep" isn't a bad album, but it isn't also a great album, it's just an average album. Next time please more faster and heavier songs guys.
